Before immigrating to the UK in 1998, I was the founder and director of The Family Tree Center for Parents in New York for 15 years. The Family Tree offered classes, groups, workshops and individual counselling to prospective and new parents.
I became a certified childbirth educator in 1978, and offered birth preparation courses and taught classes in fitness to pregnant and postnatal women for 20 years. I also started attending births as a labour companion (doula) in 1978, and I have a wealth of wisdom and experience in facilitating birth for my doula clients. My doula work also includes helping new mothers during the postnatal period when I come to their homes to assist in various ways while the mother tunes in to her baby and her role as a mother.
I also am a qualified psychotherapist and hypnotherapist. In addition to my general practice in hypnotherapy and psychotherapy, as a perinatal psychologist I specialize in the psychophysiology of birth, reconciling birth trauma and other unresolved conflicts from previous birth experiences, and prenatal and postnatal depression.
I am currently writing a book called The Handbook for the Postnatal Period, and it provides information and resources for new parents in the early months after a baby is born. There is an app that is a virtual doula attached to the book and was launched in November 2013.
