Perinatal Psychotherapy for Mothers and/or Fathers/Partners
Are you struggling with your emotions as a new mother? or a new father?
Are you finding that your expectations in no way match your real life experience?
Would you like some assistance in managing these issues?
As a perinatal psychologist and psychotherapist, I help women and/or couples who are struggling with perinatal mental illness during pregnancy and the postnatal period. About 20% of women experience perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD), and up to 50% their partners can also experience symptoms of the same issues, especially postnatal depression. This can have a profound affect on the relationship with each other, and on the attachment they develop with their babies. Specialist psychotherapy can be a vital link to working through the issues and restoring a healthy balance to life. There is a lot of evidence that says that depression and other mood disorders in the parents have a negative impact on children, including cognitive difficulties, insecure attachment, and behavioural problems. If you think you are experiencing PMAD, please get in touch and we can see if therapy is the right option for you.
Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders include:
- Postnatal depression
- Perinatal anxiety – during pregnancy and after birth
- Antenatal depression
- Postnatal PTSD after traumatic birth
- Postnatal OCD
- Perinatal Bipolar Disorder 1 & 2
- Paternal depression / anxiety / PTSD
- Postpartum psychosis (puerperal psychosis)
Whether you live locally or at a distance, help is just a phone call away. We can meet face to face or Skype, and telephone support is also available.
